Home security: Protect what matters most.

Your home should be the safest place for you and your family, but often the greatest risks are found within its walls. Improperly installed gas tanks, exposed electrical wires, overloaded outlets, or unattended lit candles are situations that can cause fires and serious accidents in a matter of seconds.

As the Volunteer Firefighters of Guatemala remind us, prevention begins at home. With simple daily checks and maintenance, you can significantly reduce risks and ensure a safer environment.

Tips for a much safer home.

The Volunteer Firefighters of Guatemala recommend taking simple but effective measures that help reduce the risk of fires and accidents in the home.

Check your gas tank

Check the cylinder, valve, and hose regularly. If you hear a hissing sound, smell gas, or see bubbles when you apply soapy water, there may be a leak. Never expose it to sunlight or store it in enclosed, unventilated spaces.

Exposed electrical wires

Damaged or exposed wires pose a serious risk of fire and electrocution. Replace them immediately and avoid using makeshift extension cords. Hire an electrician if you notice sparks or frequent power outages.

Overload in electrical outlets

Do not plug multiple high-power appliances into the same outlet. Use power strips with surge protection and be sure to unplug electrical equipment when not in use, especially during storms.

Flammable Household Products

Keep matches, lighters, paints, gasoline, and other flammable products out of the reach of children and away from stoves or heat sources. Always store them in cool, well-ventilated, and secure places.
